June 26, 2017 – Saskatchewan’s Chief Electoral Officer today received a Notice of Vacancy from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan for the constituency of Saskatoon Fairview. The current MLA for the constituency, Jennifer Campeau, has resigned the seat effective June 26, 2017.

Per Section 46(1) of The Legislative Assembly Act, 2007, a by-election to fill a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly must be held within six months after a seat becomes vacant. This means a by-election will be held in Saskatoon Fairview between 27 days after June 26 (or July 23, 2017) and within six months of June 26 (or December 26, 2017).

“One of the primary responsibilities of an elections management body is to be ready for all unscheduled electoral events such as a by-election,” says Dr. Michael Boda, Chief Electoral Officer of Saskatchewan. “While we don’t yet know the date for this by-election, my office has begun to complete many of the foundational tasks involved in conducting such an event. These tasks include ensuring a returning officer is in place and assessing potential polling locations for both for advance and by-election day.”
