November 30, 2016 – Saskatchewan’s Chief Electoral Officer today received a Notice of Vacancy from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan following the passing yesterday of Roger Parent, MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin.
“This is a difficult time for Mr. Parent’s family, for the Legislative Assembly and for the constituents of Saskatoon Meewasin,” says Dr. Michael Boda, Chief Electoral Officer of Saskatchewan. “After being informed of Mr. Parent’s passing by the Speaker of the Assembly, and pursuant to Section 43(2) of The Legislative Assembly Act, 2007, I informed the Lieutenant Governor in Council of this vacancy.”
Per Section 46(1) of The Legislative Assembly Act, 2007, a by-election to fill a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly must be held within six months after a seat becomes vacant. This means a by-election will be held in Saskatoon Meewasin by May 29, 2017.
